{"id":224,"date":"2016-10-03T18:11:49","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T23:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/?p=224"},"modified":"2016-10-10T20:20:12","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T01:20:12","slug":"transformations-headband-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/2016\/10\/03\/transformations-headband-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"Transformations Headband Activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the summer I was working on curriculum for a new course, Algebraic Reasoning, that I am teaching a section of this year. \u00a0I knew that I wanted to do lots of activities with these students, who typically struggle with math. \u00a0I came across an activity that mentioned the game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/HedBanz-Game-Edition-may-vary\/dp\/B003AIM52A\" target=\"_blank\">Hedbanz<\/a>. \u00a0Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t remember where I saw the activity, so I don&#8217;t know who to give credit to.<\/p>\n<p>I have never played the game Hedbanz, but the general gist is that you put a card in a headband and must ask yes\/no questions to figure out what is on your card.<\/p>\n<p>I bought some twelve packs of headbands from the dollar store and created cards for function transformations. \u00a0My plan\u00a0was that students would work in pairs. \u00a0Student A would tell Student B\u00a0the parent function and the transformations from the parent function so that Student B could write the equation that was in his\/her\u00a0headband, and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>After graphing transformations of linear, absolute value, and quadratic functions, I gave a quiz on transformations. \u00a0The quizzes were terrible. \u00a0I had to rethink how I would use the planned activity.<\/p>\n<p>I made new\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Transformations-Headbands.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">cards<\/a>\u00a0(printed on Avery business cards for convenience). \u00a0This time I put the transformations on the back of the card. \u00a0So now, Student A would tell Student B the a, b, h, and k parameters for the transformations. \u00a0Then Student B would identify the transformations for his\/her card, and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>The activity worked wonderfully. \u00a0My inclusion teacher and I were able to spot check pairs of students to make sure that the students were correctly identifying a, b, h, and k for their partner.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of class, I gave a requiz on transformations. \u00a0They were so much better. \u00a0This activity is definitely a keeper. \u00a0In addition, I may use the activity next year in my Algebra 2 class, as I had originally planned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the summer I was working on curriculum for a new course, Algebraic Reasoning, that I am teaching a section of this year. \u00a0I knew that I wanted to do lots of activities with these students, who typically struggle with math. \u00a0I came across an activity that mentioned the game Hedbanz. \u00a0Unfortunately, I don&#8217;t remember [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[16],"class_list":["post-224","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-algebraic-reasoning","tag-activities"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/224"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=224"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/224\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":245,"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/224\/revisions\/245"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=224"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=224"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.parentfunction.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=224"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
